About StARTworks

StARTworks is an exciting South Lanarkshire based initiative, blending employability and creative training for people over 18 who have been unemployed for more than 6 months and encourages participants to get creative whilst receiving support to boost their jobsearch skills.

The next of our 8-week programmes starts on 19th January 2010.

As the course runs for 15 hours per week, benefit entitlement will not be affected. Travel expenses and lunch are provided to all course participants.

You do not have to be looking to gain employment in the creative industries; the creative aspect of the course is designed to improve your planning skills, team-working skills, interpersonal skills and confidence.

Film-making
In the film-making option, participants will learn how to:
• operate state of the art camera equipment
• plan and schedule a shooting session
• execute their own shoot
• edit their filming into a stylish production

Photography
The photography option teaches participants how to:
• spot a photo opportunity
• shoot landscape and portrait shots the way an expert would
• edit and manipulate their picture using up to date software
• print and display their work to exhibition standards

Glass-making
The glass making option teaches participants how to:
• Plan and design their own glass pieces
• Use specialist tools and materials to cut, colour and decorate raw glass
• Explore kiln techniques such as fusing and kiln carving
• Work with additional materials including metals and kiln paper

Drama
The drama option allows participants to:
• Explore stage presence, voice projection and spacial awareness
• Build on their inter-personal and team working skills
• Evaluate performances and develop ideas
• Write, direct and star in their own short drama piece

Employability
Running alongside the creative arts training, participants will learn vital skills to help them maximize their chances of getting back into employment. Participants will learn how to:
• reply to an advert / apply for a job in a professional manner
• write a convincing and employer-friendly CV
• prepare for and deliver in interview situations
• efficiently search for jobs
• assess their own strengths and weakness
• create an action plan with realistic, achievable goals

Other activities include confidence-building and team working exercises.

After consultation with participants, StARTworks staff also organise two weeks work experience for participants in the occupational sector they are looking to progress into.
